This top is fast becoming one of my favourite autumn pieces and on this day I put a very autumnal burgundy layer over it. And then I added some ankle boots for a truly autumn feel.

This dress looks like it’s all knitted and cosy and sweater-like, but in reality although it is knitted, it’s made of cotton so it’s actually not that warm. The perfect transition dress in other words. It was a mild day so thick tights weren’t necessary, and I am determined to wear my lace up flats as much as possible before they either wear out or it gets too cold and wet. Any bets on which will happen first? The mornings were noticeably cooler that week so I added a scarf (that I would have been perfectly warm enough without) because scarves are my thing.

Be careful what you wish for: after another beautifully warm, sunny weekend, Monday morning dawned grey and damp. However, it did mean that I could take advantage of the cooler temperature and put on my first pair of tights of the season. I used to love all the brightly coloured tights but in the past couple of years I’ve stuck to more muted tones of navy, burgundy and black. And I’m OK with that.

We spent the lovely weekend with friends who came to stay with us, and on Saturday took a trip out to walk around a reservoir up in the Yorkshire Dales. Just look at these views!

This dress needs thick tights or leggings under it, and ideally it needs taller boots but it wasn’t that chilly and an ankle boot is as good a nod to fall as anything. We’ll get there soon enough with the high leg boots.

On Friday the heat dissipated and the rain came. IT was still warm out, warm enough not to need a jacket or heavy sweater, but cool enough in the morning to throw a cotton scarf on for my walk to work, and for a fine knit top. I decided to amp up casual Friday with my snakeskin heels – the perfect way to start the weekend!

Thursday was another scorcher and I was regretting the trousers by dinnertime - walking uphill in the full midday sun in black pants is not fun! But it's been lovely getting a bonus couple of weeks of summer weather.

If you thought it would be possible to transition to some fall pieces in the second week of September, think again. We plunged straight into a heatwave (highs of 26˚C in mid-September anyone?) which, I’m not going to lie, was a lovely injection of warmth.

Monday wasn’t the hottest day (by Tuesday and Wednesday I was back in my old standbys of the Primark t shirt dresses but was boring myself with those by that point so I didn’t take pictures) and a lightweight knit top and fall-esque olive green coloured trousers were fine. It was even cool enough to add a scarf in the early morning, but that was soon shed.

I picked up the necklace the previous Friday afternoon for just 50p when I was out with my sister.

Saturday was a slightly cooler day than of late so I was able to layer up a bit with a knitted top and a blazer. It was still too warm for the scarf I took out with me (just in case) though so that stayed in my bag all day. I headed into York to the Long Tall Sally store as the brand was celebrating its 40th birthday. There were free drinks, buns and discounts in store. It was good to see the shop so busy.

I decided to try out the choker trend with some black tape I'd purchased in a haberdashery the day before, for all of about 40p. I threaded my Whitby Jet pendant on to it, tied it around my neck and immediately felt like it was the late 90s and I was back at school or university again! But I went with it and by the end of the day it didn't look quite so retro to me.
