Thursday Latelies

Here are some things I’ve been enjoying this week.

  • BBC Radio Player (the new radio section of the iPlayer) App – I am an avid Radio 2 listener and they often have interesting sounding documentaries in the evenings. However, 10pm is not always the best time to be listening to a radio show so the radio player app on my iPad or phone allows me to listen to the programme on my own time schedule.
  • Catch-Up TV – in the same vein as the Radio Player above, if I’ve missed something on TV I know I can usually catch it on catch-up if it’s been on one of main channels or their subsidiaries.
  • Christmas lights – Many houses I pass by each day have put up their holiday lights now and everywhere just looks so festive! I instagrammed a picture of my own tiny tree last night – we don’t have room for a big one this year – and even though it’s small the fairy lights just make it look super sparkly.

What have you been enjoying recently?

Thursday Latelies

Here’s my round up of things I’ve been enjoying this week.

  • The Kindle app on my iPad – I downloaded a few free e-books from Amazon recently and this past week I have been enjoying reading The Railway Children. I don’t think I’ve ever read this before though I remember seeing a film of it when I was little.
  • I Heart Christmas by Lindsey Kelk – Another read, but this one was in actual book form. I’m a big fan of the I Heart... series and the latest addition doesn’t disappoint.
  • Chocolate Advent Calendar – starting the day off with a little piece of Dairy Milk chocolate can’t be a bad thing, right? Plus, it means the countdown to Christmas is ON!
  • Half days and afternoon tea – I’ve taken a couple of half day holidays this past week to meet up with people for lunch/afternoon tea out. It’s a far better way to spend an afternoon than being at work.

Here’s what I’ve been enjoying this week:

  • Enya’s And Winter Came album – it’s wintery without being too Christmassy (it’s a little bit Christmassy) and just right for this time of year.
  • My red cowboy boots – I’ve had them since Friday and have worn them four times already.
  • Messiah – it’s a big sing and for many people it marks the start of Christmas. I’m just glad to be doing one this year as I’ve missed it the past few years.
  • Cadbury’s Christmas chocolate – a Dairy Milk bar with milk and white chocolate Christmas trees on the top!

Here’s what I’ve been enjoying this week:

  • Half day closing – my village still has half day closing on a Tuesday (why yes, I do live in the mid-1980s) and usually this is a pain in the ass when you need to get to the post office or something and it’s shut. But when you just want to park up to run into the convenience store it’s a God-send as the village is pretty much empty and there’s loads of parking spaces.
  • Betty’s Treacle Tart – after we had lunch in Betty’s Tea Rooms on Saturday I picked up a couple of the treacle tarts from the attached bakery shop to take home for tea. I can confirm that these are just as delicious heated up at home and served with custard as they are when served in the tea rooms with ice cream and toffee sauce.
  • Minesweeper for iPad – back when I first had a Windows PC I was addicted to playing the Minesweeper game. The other night it occurred to me that a version was probably available for iPad, checked the app store and less than five minutes later my addiction was reignited.

Here’s what I’ve been enjoying this week:

  • Rainbows – with all the sunshine and showers we’ve been getting lately, I’ve seen lots of rainbows. They are so pretty and always make me think of the song we used to sing in Sunday school: “whenever you see a rainbow, remember God is love”.
  • Lighter mornings – with the clocks going back to GMT this past weekend we’ve been given a brief respite on the dark mornings and it’s been pretty much daylight when I’ve driven to work this week. I know it will only last another week or so, but I’ll take what I can get in terms of daylight this time of year.
  • Half term – no school traffic this week has meant getting to and from work has been so much easier as the roads are quieter. So even though I’m not a teacher: yay for half term!
  • The faux fur collar on my jacket – I put the faux fur collar back on my (faux) leather jacket this week and it makes the whole jacket feel much cosier (even though it’s just a collar).

Here's what I've been enjoying this week. How about you?

  • Mr Kipling Apple and Custard Pies – I’ve not seen these for years and they used to be my favourite type of pie! Morrison’s had them last week so I had to grab a box in case they disappear again.
  • Weekends away – even just one night away can make you feel like you’ve had a break
  • The Style 365 app now posting their outfit descriptions in English – they randomly started doing this on Tuesday this week and it’s so much better now I know what they’re saying to me about each outfit pick.

Here are the things I've been enjoying this week:

  • Yankee Candle Orange Spice candles – these smell SO good!
  • Caramel shortbread – it’s delicious – well worth the effort of making it.
  • Chocolate Crispies – also delicious but super easy and quick to make – no baking required.
  • Original Source Lemon and Tea Tree shower gel – I usually by the Boots own version of this, but the other week Original Source was on offer making it cheaper than the Boots one. And oh my goodness, I might just have to keep buying it! It smells divine!

Here are the things I've been enjoying this week.

  • Switching over my seasonal wardrobe – it’s like I have a whole new closet without spending anything!
  • Amazon’s Pre-Ordering Feature – this + my terrible memory = nice surprises when you get shipping notifications for things you had totally forgotten you ordered. Case in point – Friday morning I was telling my sister something I had heard Bill Bryson say on the radio the other day about how publishers/book sellers should give a free digital copy away with each real book purchased or people will stop buying real books (which I think is a great idea – Amazon you should totally get on this, you do it with music so why not books?) and commented that he has a new book coming out so is around a lot at present. About 3 hours later I checked my email and found the shipping notification for Bill Bryson’s new book, which I had pre-ordered about 3 months ago.
  • Candles – I know they don’t really produce any warmth, but there’s something about candlelight that makes a room feel cosy.

What have been your favourite things this week?

Here’s what I’ve been enjoying this week!

  • A four day week – because they’re infinitely better than a five day week!
  • Chocomilk – turns out the hot chocolate in the work-kitchen drinks machine is actually quite nice
  • Jelly and custard – Morrison’s do pots of jelly topped with a layer of sponge and a layer of custard. They’re like trifle without the cream.

Here’s a few things I’ve been enjoying this week.

  • A proper fire – we’ve lit a fire at home several times over the past week and it’s so cosy! It’s still too early to put the heating on but a fire really warms the place through.
  • Scarves – I mean, I enjoy those at any given point in the year but especially now the weather is cooling down and I actually need them to keep warm. Cosying up with an infinity scarf is one of the great things about autumn layering.
  • Boots – granted, I didn’t really want to be wearing boots this early, but with the chilly winds and rain we’ve been getting this past week or so I needed them. And now that they’ve come out of their summer hibernation I’m loving rediscovering my boot collection.

Here's what I've been enjoying this week: how about you?

  • Style 365 App - this app is Dutch so I have no idea what it says, but the gist of it is that it gives you an outfit idea each day. I love it! Oh, and it's teaching me the days of the week in Dutch.
  • Dryer sheets - no, not for my dryer, but as a beauty product.  I saw this tip on Tati (Glam Life Guru)'s a you a tube channel. If you have static-y hair, say from taking off a sweater, you run a dryer sheet over your hair and it takes the static right out. It will also leave your hair smelling laundry fresh.  And the pack I have in my spare room is making the whole room smell like clean washing. Bonus!
  • Wearing sweaters – having spent the summer shivering in the office air conditioning, I have no intention of spending the autumn and winter shivering in the office air conditioning.  It’s great to be able to legitimately wear jumpers and cardis and scarves now that the weather is turning.

Thursday Latelies

Here’s what I’ve been enjoying this week. What have you been enjoying this week?

  • The Any.Do app – I love lists, especially of the To Do variety: seriously, I wouldn’t get anything done without a list. This app is basically just a To Do list for your phone which lets you add tasks then cross them off (literally, you cross them off by drawing a line through them with your finger) as you complete them. There’s an Android and iPad/Phone version so I can add/delete tasks on either of my devices.
  • Holidays from work – even if you just spend the time chilling at home, it’s great to have a break from work, early mornings and everything else that comes with your usual workday routine.
  • Dark chocolate – I was never really a fan of dark chocolate by recently I have been learning to appreciate a good 70% cocoa content bar. I would even go so far as to say I like it now.

Happy Thursday! Here’s what I’ve been enjoying this week. What have you been enjoying?

  • Nail stickers – instant manicures in a packet!
  • Cadbury’s Brunch Bars – delicious cereal bars with oats and chocolate chips. I totally blame the lass I sit next to at work for getting me into these.
  • I Heart Las Vegas by Lindsey Kelk – I’d somehow managed to miss this book in the I Heart series so I’m catching up with reading it now, and enjoying it just as much as the other books in the series.

Thursday Latelies

  • My new washing machine! – We have been without a washing machine for a month now and without the help of the young man’s mum (who has done pretty much all our washing for us) I don’t know how we would have coped. My new washer was finally delivered yesterday and it’s awesome!
  • Hair appointments – I love going to the hairdressers. My stylist is awesome and looking forward to the appointment is all part of it. Then you actually go and get pampered for an hour or so, get a fancy blow dry and leave the salon feeling a million dollars.
  • Weekends away – it may only have been one night but I returned from our little seaside jaunt feeling refreshed.
  • Bagels – toasted and buttered hot – delish!

Thursday Latelies

I’m bringing back Thursday Latelies everyone! For those of you who have joined us since I last did this feature, it’s just a list of things I’ve been enjoying this week, published on a Thursday (or that’s the plan anyway, sometimes it might be Friday).

Let’s get started!

  • Vaseline Spray and Go Moisturiser – you can read my full review of this product here but seriously? Moisturiser in a spray can? Genius. Why didn’t anyone think of this before?
  • The slightly cooler temperatures – I love when it’s hot and good weather, but cooler evenings have meant I can blow dry my hair again! And blow dries make for better hair days the following day. Yay!
  • VO5’s gel wax – I have rediscovered this product this week after about 9 years. It really helps smooth out my blow dry. I’ll be reviewing it soon.
  • The cheesecake in the work canteen – it’s delicious but it’s also a bad thing knowing that there is cheesecake just 2 floors below me. I manage to resist the temptation most of the time.
  • Detroit City, the new song by Texas – it’s stuck in my head and I think I’m going to download it from Amazon.

What have you been enjoying this week?

  • Fat free flapjack – it feels like a naughty treat but it’s actually quite healthy.
  • The beeping mechanism in my car that lets me know I’ve left my lights on – I’d have had a very flat battery several times by now if it weren’t for this alarm.
  • Sunshine and warmth – at last! I was beginning to feel seriously deprived by this ‘summer’ so to have had even a few days of dry, warm weather is fabulous.

Thursday Latelies

Happy Thursday! Here are a few things that I've been enjoying or have been making me smile this week.

  • WW Dairy Spread – 0PP for up to 15g, 1PP for up to 40g! Awesome.Sauce.
  • Weeks off work – sleeping in, pleasing ourselves, taking off to Edinburgh for three days with no notice because we feel like it: holidays rock!
  • The sign in Tesco last week that said ‘Due to the challenging UK weather conditions we may be unable to provide a full delivery of broccoli’. I love that they’re choosing to see a full-on monsoon as ‘challenging’!
  • The signs on the parking meters in Berwick-Upon-Tweed that said ‘These machines do not accept new 5p and 10p coins’. For the benefit of those outside the UK, the ‘new’ coins were introduced in 1990 and 1992 respectively. Presumably you could still use the old 5p and 10p coins (which were demonetised in 1990 and 1993) if you could find any? (Strangely enough the notices didn’t mention the ‘new’ 50p coin, introduced in 1997, but presumably the machines wouldn’t accept these either.) Anyway, the signs made me chuckle and question exactly what year it was in Berwick.

Thursday Latelies (In Text Form)

Happy Thursday! Here’s what I’ve been enjoying this week!

  • Dirty Dancing – what could be better than turning on the TV and finding your favourite movie is randomly playing on Channel 5. Awesome!
  • Laughing Cow Extra Light triangles – a cheese revelation! These are 0 WW points for 1 triangle and 1 just point for 2 or 3 triangles. I had one on toast with beans last weekend as a healthier alternative to real cheese.
  • Online recipes – I don’t cook from recipe books that much anymore. If I want to make something I will usually Google for a recipe then set up my laptop on the kitchen table for cooking made easy. If I know I’ll want to make the recipe again then I’ll print it off and add it to my folder of magazine tear-outs and online print-outs. That folder comes out far more often than an actual recipe book these days.
  • Just Dance 3 for Wii – awesome tracks, group routines where everyone does different movements and a whole lot of fun! I might invest come payday.

Thursday Latelies (in text form)

Happy Thursday! Here’s what I’ve been enjoying this week!

  • Cakes that are low in WW points – apple muffins in particular this week. There was a recipe in this month’s WW magazine for apricot muffins but I substituted apples instead. The muffins contain oats as well as flour so that cuts down the points value, and there’s not much margarine in them either. Plus they are delicious!
  • Ben and Jerry’s chocolate fudge brownie frozen yoghurt – another low points indulgence. I tried the Yoo Moo chocolate flavour the other week and it was OK, but the B&J stuff tastes just like chocolate ice cream! Plus it has bits of gooey brownie in it so it’s a real treat.
  • Parcels in the post – especially when they’re waiting for you back at the office after a week off. I had a book from Amazon and a hat from ASOS waiting for me on Monday, then my gorgeous orange shoes arrived on Tuesday.
  • BBC Four – I love that TV channel! It’s so random but shows some really interesting programmes. The other night I watched a documentary about the rise and fall of Grammar Schools, followed by one about the manufacture of WW2 Wellington bomber aircraft, including an attempt to break the world record of making one in less than 30 hours. The record attempt had been filmed and they invited the people involved back to watch it around 60 years later. (They broke the record too, completing the whole plane and getting it in the air in just over 24 hours.)

Thursday Latelies

Here's what I've been enjoying and am thankful for this week!

  • Radio 2 – You can be making the tea on a quiet Sunday evening and suddenly Radio 2 will play something completely random yet completely awesome such as the Blossom theme tune. That happened this past Sunday and that is why I love that radio station.
  • Night Nurse cough and cold medicine – the thing that has been helping me sleep at night this week! I still wake up coughing, but not nearly as much as I would had I not been taking this stuff.
  • Sunglasses – since I got my contact lenses my eyes have become really sensitive to sunlight. Now that the weather has finally improved my large tortoiseshell sunglasses from Claire’s Accessories are pretty much glued to my head (I even turned my car around this morning when I got part way down the street and realised I didn’t have them with me). They weren’t expensive but they are so comfy I can wear them all day and they don’t dig in behind my ears. Sometimes I even forget they are on the top of my head as I can’t feel them.
