Tutorial: How To DIY Ripped Knee Jeans

I have wanted a pair of black ripped jeans for a while now but I didn't want to spend any money on them (story of my life!). I have a couple of pairs of black jeans so I thought I'd DIY a pair, which is better in a way than buying them as you can put the rips exactly where you want them. I photographed the process for a DIY post so here goes!

You will need:

A pair of jeans
A pair of scissors
Chalk (or I guess you could use a pencil or pen if your jeans are paler - I obviously needed something that would show up on black so white chalk was perfect. Make sure whatever you use will wash out though - you don't want ink stains on your jeans)

Ready, set, DIY!

First of all, put on your jeans:

Grab your chalk (or whatever):

Mark on your jeans where you want the rips to be (my top tip is to put them just above your knee, that way the hole won't rip further or split where you don't want it to. Thanks go to Tiffany for that tip in her Nordstrom sale haul video!):

Take the jeans off an lay them out on the floor. Get chalk all over the legs:

Make a small cut on the line you marked out:

Cut across each side of the snip, but don't go too close to the side seams:

Put the jeans back on and voila! Ripped jeans!

Throw them in the wash to wash the chalk off and to get that soft, fraying around the rips and once they're dry, trim any loose threads that are hanging down. And that's it! Enjoy your ripped jeans!

Outfit: How To Cover a Make Up Stain

Esprit Lexa Wedge Trainers

This top has a large and annoying make up stain on the front of it. That’s a real shame as it’s a really good quality top (Long Tall Sally), I love the colour of it, and I’ve had it less than 18 months, at least 6 of which it has had said make up stain.

This week I finally decided to do something about it so the top would stop languishing, unworn, in my wardrobe and start serving a useful purpose once again. Earlier in the week I’d taken a trip to Asda and purchased some stick on jewels (I did try the local haberdasheries first but one only had purple jewels and the other was shut Monday and Tuesday. I also really like the word haberdashery and now I’ve used it twice). On Wednesday evening I found my fabric glue and set about attaching the jewels to the top. It took all of about 15 minute, plus glue drying time and I have what seems like a new top, and more importantly, one that is wearable.

Flared jeans is not a silhouette I've worn in a while, but I like the cut of this pair and thought I'd do something different for casual Friday this week. Worn with my trusty wedge trainers from last winter they are the perfect length too.

NL Blue

Happy Monday everyone! How was your weekend? I spent all of Saturday spring cleaning and yesterday we visited my sister, brother in law and niece.

Back to it today though, and not only am I saving a pair of shoes, I have a new scarf that I knitted myself! I know, I can’t stand the excitement either. The scarf has been a work in progress since the end of December. I started knitting one twice as wide but it ended up too big to actually wear so I unravelled it all and started again. I think this one is the perfect width. The yarn is 30% wool and I love how the various blues in it have formed themselves into a haphazard pattern.

The shoes I have had since about 2007 and they cost just £5 in the New Look Sale. They get a lot of wear and are looking a bit battered now, but I love the colour and the chunkier heel makes they quite comfy to walk in.

Blue sweater – Long Tall Sally (sale)
Navy cord trousers – Long Tall Sally (sale)
Blue shoes – New Look (sale)
Blue knitted scarf – self made
Silver hoops – gifted
Blue necklace (that you can’t really see in the pictures) – New Look sale

DIY Project: No-Sew (and No-Knit) Knitted Cushion Covers

I really like the look of knitted cushions, but the only ones I could find in the shops were huge and too big for my sofa. I decided I would make my own using small cushions and a knitted throw, all purchased from Ikea.

First up, gather your supplies:

Cushions – I used the Krakris cushions from Ikea, £1.25 each

Knitted throw – I used the Ursula one from Ikea, £20

Wunderweb hemming tape – try your local haberdashery

Tea towel or other cloth that you can wet (for bonding the hemming tape)

Iron

Scissors

Measuring tape

Buttons (optional)

So, it was a bit trial and error for me but basically what I did was measure out the size of the piece of fabric I would need to cover the cushion, cut it out and then used the Wunderweb to fuse together the seams on the inside so that (hopefully) the knitting wouldn’t fray too badly. I left the wide ribbed part of the throw on the other side of the cushions so I have the option to add some buttons at a later date should I find some I like.

I made four cushion covers out of one throw and am pretty pleased with the results. It only took a couple of hours and would have been completed in one afternoon had I not run out of hemming tape!
