I found my non-fleecy burgundy tights (that I thought I’d lost/had got thrown out for having ladders/holes last year) so that was as good an excuse as any for a burgundy-based outfit. I briefly considered a black polo neck but went with the burgundy one as it was less sombre.

There was a frost the morning I wore this so the big cosy sweater and OTK boots were the right way to go. I am happy to report that although I found these boots a nightmare for falling down when I had them on with tights, they are fine over jeans and they pretty much stay put. Yay!

I cannot remember the last time I wore flares. It must be a good few years ago now. I hear they are on their way back in, but I see little evidence of that, both online and in the big wide world. These pants are old, really old. I have had them well over 10 years. They have been taken in, had the zip replaced and they are still going strong.

For me personally, flares got abandoned when skinny jeans took over and for good reason. Think about it. The UK is wet, much of the time, and in skinny jeans you don’t have lots of wet fabric flapping about your ankles when it rains. If it’s really wet you can pull a pair of boots over your skinnies and stay completely dry. Secondly, unless you are going to wear tall boots under your flare then your lower legs are going to feel a draught. You’ll need some knee high socks to help with that (which is what I’m wearing today). And finally, you can wear your skinny jeans with any heel height and you’re good to go. With flares you need to commit each pair of trousers to a style of shoe as you will need an extra few inches on the length of the pants you want to wear with heels. Conversely, if you wear your longer length pairs of trousers with flats they will wear and disintegrate at the back.

So yeah, skinny jeans are just way more practical if you ask me. Having said that though, there are a couple of pairs of flared leg jeans (one in each length, heels and flats, natch) still left in my wardrobe, waiting for their moment to shine. It might come this winter.

This outfit is a mish-mash of Primark and Long Tall Sally, much like my wardrobe really. If you look closely you will see that the skirt is made from a kind of bonded lace fabric. It’s quite old now and I don’t wear it as often as I should but I think the blue/black combination works really well. I’d never thought to pair it with navy before but from a distance it does look navy so it works well.

There is just one thing better than a plaid flannel shirt and that is a plaid flannel shirt that is actually a DRESS. Yay for dresses and easy outfits. This dress has fairly thin fabric (it’s from Primark) so doesn’t hang quite as well as I’d like. I think I am going to take to it with my sewing machine and stitch up the bottom half of it to make the buttons lay straighter when I’m wearing it.

I love this look for winter. A simple sweater and jeans dressed up with tall boots. If the boots have heels it’s even better.

Since chopping my hair off I have found the back of my neck gets a little chilly so I make sure to add a scarf every time I leave the house.

I’ve worn my cotton sweater dress already this season, but this was the first outing of one that actually looks and feels like jumper material. I think that a sweater dress is a really easy way to look like you’ve made an effort (you’re wearing a dress, you’ve made an effort, right?) when you really haven’t (you’re actually just wearing a long jumper and what is comfier than that?). Add some tights, boots and perhaps some statement jewellery and you will be comfy and cosy all day long. I added a scarf for a bit of colour.

I almost put on OTK boots with this outfit, but I felt like they didn’t work so well with the length of my top (I’m very picky about things like that). So the ankle boots it was, and the OTKs can be saved for another day. I only regretted my decision slightly on my walk to work when my knees felt a little chilly, but the rest of the day I was glad I’d plumped for the most comfortable heels I own.

By the time this post goes live Remembrance Day will have long since passed, but I wanted to show you a close up of my poppy. We made them at craft group and sold them at a local church in aid of the Royal British Legion. Regular poppies are OK but how many times have I started out from home with one, only to get to church and find there’s just pin on my coat lapel? Too many times. I usually buy one of the little metal pin badges but this year it’s nice to have something different.

Another day, another Primark-heavy outfit. It was actually more Primark orientated before I swapped out my long black cardi for this shorter one, and looked like I lost about half a stone in the process. I love me a chunky knit but you do have to be careful what you wear them with. I probably shouldn’t shop at Primark so much and I know I should plump for quality over quantity, but if you choose carefully Primark do come out with some well-made pieces and, after getting so used to their prices, I really can’t bring myself to spend more on items unless they are particularly outstanding.
