Outfit: Shoeper Challenge 2013/14 Save 40 | Tartan Tights and Faux Fur Trims

Deichmann Graceland faux fur bootie

Happy Halloween y’all! There’s no dressing up going on at my office today, but I went for a black and grey dress anyway. I thought I’d liven it up a bit with some patterned tights.

31-10-13b

Shoe save 40 is these faux fur trimmed booties which came to me a couple of Christmases ago c/o Deichmann Shoes. We have a Deichmann store in Leeds now so it’s definitely somewhere I will be visiting more often (before it was either online or a trip to Wakefield). Deichmann produce some amazing shoes but their prices are awesome – around £20-£60. I like the trim on these boots and need to wear them as much as I can over the winter. I feel like faux fur is only really appropriate late-October to February. What do you think?

31-10-13

The booties also have buttons! My absolute favourite decoration detail!

Black and grey dress – Next Tall
Grey and burgundy tartan tights – Next
Black faux fur trim booties – c/o Deichmann Shoes
Silver necklace – New Look
Silver hoops – gifted
Silver cuff – M&S (free on 3 for 2)

Thursday Latelies

Here’s what I’ve been enjoying this week:

  • Rainbows – with all the sunshine and showers we’ve been getting lately, I’ve seen lots of rainbows. They are so pretty and always make me think of the song we used to sing in Sunday school: “whenever you see a rainbow, remember God is love”.
  • Lighter mornings – with the clocks going back to GMT this past weekend we’ve been given a brief respite on the dark mornings and it’s been pretty much daylight when I’ve driven to work this week. I know it will only last another week or so, but I’ll take what I can get in terms of daylight this time of year.
  • Half term – no school traffic this week has meant getting to and from work has been so much easier as the roads are quieter. So even though I’m not a teacher: yay for half term!
  • The faux fur collar on my jacket – I put the faux fur collar back on my (faux) leather jacket this week and it makes the whole jacket feel much cosier (even though it’s just a collar).

Leave me a comment and tell me what you’ve been enjoying this week!

Outfit: Shoeper Challenge 2013/14 Save 39 | How to Wear a Cropped Sweater

30-10-13d

30-10-13e

Faithrigid

There was a definite chill in the air yesterday (and this morning: 4°C anyone?!) so last night after step class I decided it was cold enough to pull out my thermal tops from their storage bag to wear as a pyjama top. And do you know, I slept so well last night. I think it’s because I didn’t wake up because I was cold and I have the past few nights. Thermals are the way to go, people.

30-10-13c

I thought I was going to get a shoe save in yesterday but when I checked my list I saw that I had already saved the red shoes. So to make up for that, I’m saving some boots today. These are by Faith and were bought in their sale back in about 2006. They are leather and I just love the colour. The heels are quite high so I don’t wear them as often as I probably should. But I love the pointy toes and the ruching on the legs so they stay in my collection to be brought out every now and then.

30-10-13

Anyway, the title of this post is ‘How to Wear a Cropped Sweater’ and my main tip for this is to pair it with a high waist and layer something underneath. At my age I don’t want to be baring my mid-rift so a high waisted pencil skirt with a top tucked into it is the perfect accompaniment. (See also: 4°C this morning – it’s too cold to be baring flesh!) I also like a cropped top with a longer tank or t shirt layered underneath and not tucked in, so you get the full effect of the layering. See this post for an example of that.

Cream crop sweater – Topshop Tall
Denim pencil skirt – Long Tall Sally (eBay)
Black tights – Falke (TK Maxx)
Teal boots – Faith (sale)
Teal beads – Scope
Turquoise scarf – H&M

Outfit: Shoeper Challenge 2013/14 Save 38 | How to Wear Over the Knee Boots

28-10-13

28-10-13c

28-10-13e

Priceless grey over knee

The south of the UK was hit by a big storm last night, but it’s just a bit wet and windy up here in the Frozen North. And also: cold. 8°C at 7am this morning – I’m sure it was about 15° this time last week. I drove through a couple of mini floods on the way to work but only where the roads always get waterlogged after heavy rain.

28-10-13b

I decided it was time the over the knee boots came out this week, since it’ll be November on Friday (shh! No, I didn’t say that!). I see them like a blanket for my knees as they keep you so cosy. Over the knee boots are everywhere again this season and are a great staple for autumn and winter. I know some people are afraid to wear them so here are my tips if you want to give them a try.

1. Suede or faux suede – this style of boot is far less scary in a suede or faux suede finish than in a leather one. If you like leather though, go for it (I have a pair in matt black leather) but avoid patent leather to avoid the Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman connotations.

2. Try a colour other than black – the pair I have on today is grey, Amber has a lovely pair in brown leather. I also have a pair of flat OTKs in brown. Which brings me on to...

3. Flat or low heels – yes, the boots I have on today have a 4+ inch heel. No, you don’t have to wear heels that high. Flat OTK boots can be a great place to start with the trend – they look a little more dressy over jeans than lower-leg boots do, and they’re not scary at all. I mean, they’re just flat boots.

4. Wear them with jeans – I love a heeled OTK boot over jeans. They make your legs look super skinny for one thing

5. Wear with longer length skirts – this is a great way to be super warm in the winter. If the top of your skirt covers the tops of your boots then no one knows how tall the boots are and your legs are super warm.

6. The taller the boots the less short the skirt looks – if you want to wear that dress that’s just verging on being too short then try it with OTK boots. The less gap there is between the tops of your boots and the hem of your skirt, the less short your skirt looks (and the less of your legs are on display).

28-10-13d

My boots today are from Priceless Shoes. Priceless haven’t had good OTK boots in the past few years, but I got this pair about 4 or 5 winters ago. I had a lovely pair of black pointy toed OTK boots with a mid-height heel that I wore to death (literally – the heel fell off) and that I still miss.

Denim skirt – Jasper Conran (Debenhams, with discount)
Grey ribbed tights – H&M
Grey faux suede OTK boots – Priceless Shoes
Silver square hoops – Claire’s

Priceless Navy

Yesterday’s scarf is quite a handy one to have around as it ties together navy and purple, and navy and burgundy. I went with a combination of navy and purple today for a morning at church teaching my Sunday school class, and then an afternoon visiting my parents with my sister and my niece.

27-10-13d

I styled my hair wavy by blow drying it Saturday night with Bumble and Bumble Thickening Hairspray and some gel wax, and then curling it with my Babyliss wand. It went a little crazy and big but once it had been slept on it calmed down. Sunday morning I just finger combed it with some Frizz Ease serum. I’m telling you this more for my own benefit really so that if I look back at these pictures and like my hair like this, I’ll know what I did to get it looking that way.

27-10-13c

I saved another pair of boots on Sunday too. This pair was the one that got away for a long time – I ordered them online from Priceless Shoes but they only had one pair left and they were damaged so my order was cancelled. Months later I saw them for £10 in a store and snapped them up. The heel is a little chunkier than I usually wear, but that puts them on trend for this season, handily. I just love the colour of them.

These suede shoe boots were bought from New Look back in about 2007 and cost £25 which was a total bargain as they are real suede. And they have buttons on the sides! They came in black too, and I think grey but I liked the blue colour the best.

Shoeper Challenge Week 8 | Shoe Saves

I’ve been a bit rubbish at doing these posts and linking up with Shoeperwoman as I’ve been away the last couple of weekends. But here are the shoes I’ve saved this past week:

Monday: Matalan Teal wedges
Matalan teal

Tuesday: Mustang Grey boots
Mustang Alora boots

Wednesday: Bocage Leopard Print booties
Sarenza Bocage Dimao boots

Friday: New Look Blue suede booties
newlookboots

Well that’s more than I thought for this week and takes me up to 36 saves in total. Not quite halfway, but not too shabby for only 8 weeks in.

Irregular Choice Baby Beauty

Happy Friday y’all! Can we just pretend that it’s not dark and rainy today? Autumn, you know I love you but I could really do with less of this rain and fog you’ve been bringing us lately.

25-10-13c

I got my hair done last night (which you will already know if you follow me on Instagram (and if you don’t follow me on Instagram: why not? The link is below)) and by some miracle it wasn’t raining or windy when I left the salon so my fancy blow dry has remained pretty much intact for today. Which is good as I’m going out tonight. Here’s what it looked like last night, before I slept on it:

24-10-13h

As you can see I’ve had some more highlights put in which have lightened it considerably and I’ve had about an inch taken of the ends as they were getting really dry.

25-10-13d

So, on to my outfit. I thought spots on spots would be fun so I went with it. And a plain black sweater to balance out the prints. The booties came c/o Sarenza and they are one of the few places that stock Irregular Choice in a 42 and a 43 if you take a larger shoe size.

Black sweater – New Look Tall
Polka dot jeans – Long Tall Sally (eBay)
Black and white polka dot booties – Irregular Choice (c/o Sarenza)

Thursday Latelies

Here's what I've been enjoying this week. How about you?

  • Mr Kipling Apple and Custard Pies – I’ve not seen these for years and they used to be my favourite type of pie! Morrison’s had them last week so I had to grab a box in case they disappear again.
  • Weekends away – even just one night away can make you feel like you’ve had a break
  • The Style 365 app now posting their outfit descriptions in English – they randomly started doing this on Tuesday this week and it’s so much better now I know what they’re saying to me about each outfit pick.

I appear to have jinxed the weather with all my talk of a mild autumn yesterday. This morning? Not so much. Just 5°C when I got in my car. Sorry about that. And also: Brr! I was glad I went for a sweater rather than the long sleeve t I was considering yesterday. I could have done with a proper coat rather than my (faux) leather jacket though.

24-10-13

The temperature plummeted with a rainstorm yesterday and last night when I went to do the supermarket shopping the EMU boots came out (complete with furry boot toppers) and so did a knitted hat.

24-10-13d

So tonight I have a hair appointment and I’m getting so more colour put in. Stay tuned for that tomorrow.
