Outfit: October 2nd - Comfort Zone
The last few days of September and the beginning of October I felt like I was really back in my element when it comes to getting dressed. I am not good at dressing for warm weather (even though I do enjoy the warmth that the sunshine brings) and it's always kind of a relief to me, sartorially speaking, when the first autumn chills arrive and I can start layering again. The first weekend of October was still relatively warm, and I ended up wearing this same outfit (more or less) twice.
Saturday we had a couple of friends over and headed out for a walk in the afternoon. We got a bit wet and muddy (the young man's walk routes always seem to go through a boggy patch for some reason) so when we got home I changed into pretty well what you see here (but sub the blazer for a black cardigan and the shoes for black ankle boots as it was raining) before we went for tea at our local pub.
Sunday morning the choir were leading the church service for Harvest Festival so I smartened up a bit with the blazer and was good to go.
Oh, and I changed my hair colour on the Friday night: despite dying it almost black at Christmas, then again with a dark brown a couple of months back, the blonde highlights from two years ago are STILL showing though, so I went with a super dark brown again in order to feel more like myself.

Outfit: September 30th – Grey and Black
And so the end of September was upon us. The sun was shining so I popped in my contact lenses and stuck my favourite aviator style sunglasses on my head. The top is one you’ve seen several times before, but worn turned around so that the cross straps that were in the back are now at the front. I think cross front and lace up tops are going to be big this season, and it means no necklace is required which is one fewer decision to make in the morning.
There was a definite nip in the early morning air: autumn proper is right around the corner. Which brings me on to the jeans. How? You may well ask. I see photos of people (well, of bloggers) wearing distressed denim in the snow. People who do this: how do you do it?! Don’t your knees and thighs get cold? Or is it just me who is a nesh wuss? (Highly likely now I come to think of it.) Answers on a postcard in the comments section please…

Outfit: September 29th – In or Out?
To tuck or not to tuck? That is the question (to paraphrase Shakespeare!). I had planned to wear the top tucked into the skirt as the skirt has an exposed zip at the back, but then I actually tried it and wondered whether it made my torso look short and that I was all leg (leg lengthening tip for you, right there!). I mean, I AM all leg at the best of times but tucking the top just seemed to accentuate the fact. Looking back at the pictures though the effect isn’t so pronounced. So I don’t know now! I took photos both ways so what do you think?

Outfit: September 28th – Burgundy and Black
Where did September go this year? I feel like I say that every year but seriously? This year it has just whizzed by. Perhaps it is because we’ve been busy. We’ve had friends to stay, we’ve been away – it seems like we had something on each weekend. Not that I’m complaining, I like to get out and about, especially whilst the weather is still good.
It was fun to dig out my burgundy jeans again. There was nothing stopping me wearing them in the summer, but I always feel like burgundy is such a fall colour that I like to save it up to wear when the temperatures dip. Rather than pairing it with plain black I went for a fun window pane check and my cream and black shoes which I haven’t worn in ages.

Outfit: September 27th – Cosy Scarf
It wasn’t really cold enough for such a massive scarf, but sometimes you just want to bundle up, you know? And this was one of those times. Paired with a cotton t and just my denim jacket for my walk to work I wasn’t too warm, and I had what is practically a blanket to cosy up in for the rest of the day.

Outfit: September 26th - The First OTK Boots

The last Monday of September was the chilliest day of the season so far, so it was time to break out the boots! It wasn’t cold enough for thick tights with them so I went for nude ones, a look I rather like. It was chilly enough for a (light) sweater though.

Outfit: September 22nd – Transitioning a Summer Dress to Fall
If you’re not quite ready to give up your summer items yet, that’s OK. The cost per wear of this t shirt dress must be in pence by now (it only cost £6 to start with) and as it’s pretty much black I figured I could get in at least one more wear of it before the real autumn wear set in. Pairing it with booties and a scarf (especially a scarf in an autumnal hue) makes it immediately less ‘summer’ and more inter-seasonal.
We call it autumn, the US call it fall, but did you know that until 1500, autumn was called "harvest" in Britain? And that Britons only adopted the French word "automne" in the 18th century? And for anyone thinking that 'fall' is an Americanism - it isn't. The word "fall"– short for "falling of the leaf" – was used in the 17th century throughout Britain.
