Can I start getting excited for spring yet? No? OK, well I’ll take the little signs that mean we’re edging that fraction closer.

Signs of Spring

1. It was still light at 5pm last night! Well, I say still light: perhaps ‘it wasn’t dark’ would be a more accurate description but either way, it was the lightest it’s been at that time in a LONG while and I will take that.
2. It was 9˚C at 8am this morning. And I know, that doesn’t sound like a lot, but it was warm enough to not need a hat or gloves, and it was warm enough for a lighter jacket. And again, I will take that.

Due to the aforementioned warm not so cold temperature I wore shoes rather than boots. (And before you all ask, I have socks inside them so my feet were toasty thank you very much.) I still needed a sweater and a scarf mind, but you know, baby steps people. Baby steps.

And speaking of scarves – I have a different one on today! My friend (and former work colleague) I saw on Monday night commented that I always wore scarves at my previous job. I did, but only because it was perpetually chilly there. My new office is warm, too warm for a scarf much of the time (not that I am complaining!) so my scarves have been more outerwear this winter. My other friend said something interesting about scarves too. She said she likes to wear them at work as they’re like an extra line of defence to hide behind in difficult meetings. Scarves as security blankets at work folks, you heard it here first!

This is probably the point where I should apologise for wearing the same scarf for the third day in a row but you know what? I’m not going to. This is real life, and in real life you do wear the same accessory day after day. So this week it’s the leopard print scarf three days in a row and also my Chelsea boots the past two days. I just bought a duplicate of the Chelsea boots because they go with everything, I wear them all the time and one day I will walk a hole in the sole of the right foot. Because that’s what I do with all my shoes it seems. Yes, I could have them resoled, but when they only cost £10 to start with and Primark are still selling the exact same ones, I figured I’d just buy a back up. I may still have the originals fixed when they wear out if the uppers are still in good condition and then I’d have two pairs to last me a long time.

I like this blog to be an actual representation of what I’m really wearing on a day to day basis. It’s not high fashion (it’s all high street and a lot of Primark, let’s be honest!) but it’s what I wear and it that means my current favourite scarf three days in a row (and I can’t promise I won’t make it five in a row), and two or three pairs of boots on repeat then so be it.

I have a couple of striped t shirt dresses but they are literally extra-long length t shirts and not at all suitable for this time of the year. I was in town at the weekend and nabbed this striped number in Primark which is a heavier fabric (with longer sleeves) and perfect for transitioning into spring (which I hope we will be doing before too long. In the meantime it’s perfect with fleece-lined tights). It comes in various (plain) colours so there’s a chance I will go back for another one.

By the time you read this I will have had my hair done. I saw a couple of my friends the night before this outfit and one of them cuts hair so I booked in with her to sort out my layers. Check out my Instagram for up to date pictures!

I haven’t worn this dress since the late summer I don’t think. It’s a t-shirt fabric and I guess I’ve had it in my head that it wouldn’t be warm enough for this time of year. I left it out when I put away my summer clothes though, and I will have done that for a reason (although at this moment in time I’m not sure what that reason was…) so I decided to get it out and layer it up with a cosy cardi and fleece-lined tights. I was plenty warm enough and it’s just a comfy plain grey dress so it worked fine for the time of year too.

Recipe: Filling and Healthy Quiche

So I’m back on the Weight Watchers wagon this year, and I’ve been mixing a few Filling and Healthy days in with counting points (note: I’m still counting ProPoints, the previous system used by Weight Watchers – I couldn’t get on board with the new SmartPoints system). For those unfamiliar with Weight Watchers, the Filling and Healthy (F&H) method is where you can eat whatever you want from a specified list of items (which have been designated healthy and are supposed to keep you fuller for longer), and then anything you have that isn’t on this list comes out of your weekly points allowance. The list includes most fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, pasta, rice, eggs, fat free plain yoghurt, skimmed milk etc so it’s quite similar to Slimming World’s system too. This quiche recipe is genius, and if you’re on F&H it has a ProPoints value of just 4 for the whole recipe (which is for the cheese, there are 28 ProPoints for the whole thing if you’re counting). I made it the other weekend, it cut into four generous portions so we had it for tea, then I had the other two slices for lunches that week. You’re not getting pastry, but the wraps taste pretty damn close, and are way, way healthier.

Ingredients
4 Weight Watchers wraps
4 eggs
1 cup skimmed milk
100g Eat Lean protein cheese (I got this in Tesco, it’s super low fat)
Ham
1 green pepper (but you can use any colour you like, add more veg such as onions, mushrooms etc)

Method
1. Line a deep springform tin with the wraps (or I used a non-springy cake tin and lined it with baking paper first)
2. Beat together the eggs, milk and cheese
3. Chop the ham and veg and put it in the tin
4. Pour in the egg mixture
5. Bake at 180˚C for about 50 minutes

It wasn’t as good cold the next day, but it was still tasty and I’d definitely eat it again as a cold lunch.

And just like that, the end of January was upon us. For the final Friday of the month I did a re-run of the previous Friday’s outfit. It occurred to me over the weekend that I did in fact have a longer length red and white striped top, and that that top also had longer sleeves. I added over knee boots this time as it was just minus 3˚C outside first thing (and it didn’t warm up much either).

I wash my hair every two or three days and by day three it often needs a little help. I read this post by Cori earlier in the week (though I could never go seven days like she does!) and she recommends blasting your hair with a blow dryer after applying dry shampoo. I hadn’t tried it before but I did this day and it even got out the kinks from sleeping with my hair in a bun meaning I didn’t need to use my straighteners.

Finally, check out my new phone case! I feel like such a blogging cliché as it’s rose gold, but it’s so pretty and sparkly! I actually got a whole new phone, not just a case, which is very exciting. It’s a Galaxy S6 and it is SO MUCH better than my old phone.

Bright blue has long been one of my favourite colours, but I don’t actually have many items in my wardrobe in that shade right now. A couple of the things I DO have though are this jumper and scarf. I love me a good blanket scarf and, having worn the tartan ones to death before Christmas I feel like this one is a good nod to the spring weather that is (hopefully!) on the way, but it will keep me warm whilst we are still in the grip of winter (the day after I wore this outfit, the temperature didn’t get above freezing all day). And speaking of the cold weather, I would have worn my black ankle boots with this outfit, but I decided that the knee high ones would be warmer.

We awoke to freezing fog last Monday morning and my cosy EMU boots began to look more and more appealing as I got ready for work. But I eschewed them in favour of the slightly smarter option of my Chelsea boots. I added my scarf for some colour in my all neutral outfit. This scarf used to get worn all the time, but this winter I have preferred my super-cosy blanket scarves.
