Outfit: In Praise of the Bandeau

Skechers flip flops

Remember last week how I wanted to wear my navy dress but decided it was too warm for two layers? The trouble with that dress is that it is too low cut to wear without a cami underneath and it struck me then that a bandeau would be the perfect solution: coverage without being an actual layer. I held on to that thought and whilst I was out in Harrogate on Tuesday wondered where on earth I would buy a bandeau, other than somewhere such as American Apparel. (I don’t even know whether American Apparel do them, it just strikes me that they would.) My sister and I went into New Look and at the bottom of the escalator (the Harrogate branch is in the basement of the Victoria Gardens shopping centre) was a rack of bandeaus (bandeaux? I don’t know). They were marked £2.99 so I bought three, and when I got to the till they were actually reduced to £2. I have a few tank tops that tend to stretch with wear and if you are not careful you can end up flashing your bra, so I teamed one such top with a bright orange bandeau on Thursday and loved it.

Thursday morning the young man had a load of cement delivered for the floor of the garage extension he is building. I helped him to level it out and I did some washing. At the end of the spin cycle the washing machine died – there were strange noises and smoke and everything, so I spent a little time looking online for a new one.

The young man’s parents called round to see us and to look at the newly installed stove. After dinner I went to Ikea and to the mall for a couple of bits and then we enjoyed the sunshine in the garden.

Tuesday morning was warm and sunny again. I went off to my sister’s as we had planned a day out in Harrogate. We dropped my niece off at my parents’ house then headed off to Harrogate.

We parked at the top of the Valley Gardens and walked through the gardens to get an ice cream from the cafe. They sell Ripley Ice Cream there and it is probably the best whippy ice cream you will have anywhere.
We carried on into town and did a little shopping in the sales, then went for afternoon tea in the Crown Hotel. It was a lovely day out and we had a little time to play in the garden with my niece when we got back to our parents’.

Reef Ginger flip flops brown

Monday was hot again so I was back in shorts to start my week off work. This was the day that the log burning stove (the one that’s started appearing in the background of my pictures) was being fitted. That meant lots of noise and lots of dust as they had to drill through the outside wall to fit the flue pipe. Not fun. I spent the morning doing some washing and scheduling blog posts, then took myself off to my hometown for the afternoon.

Sunday morning we were up in good time to go to church. After the service we had a coffee in the hall and then the choir headed up to a local park for our annual crown green bowling afternoon.

14-07-13

We had a picnic lunch by the club house (complete with tea and cake) and then the bowling got underway. Crown green bowling is a lovely way to spend a sunny afternoon, especially when no one is taking it particularly seriously (even though there was a trophy at stake). We were in the park until almost 5pm, and then it was time to go home.

The young man and I drove across the city and met my sister and brother in law at our favourite Chinese buffet restaurant where we enjoyed a good meal Turns out you can work up quite an appetite on the bowling green on a hot afternoon.

I wore my cropped jeans but if I had thought I could get away with shorts in church I would have work those. It was that hot out again. It wasn’t until I was writing this post that I realised I was head to toe in New Look on Sunday.

Well it’s still hot out. Looks like we’re getting a proper summer this year. Which is good as it’s the first time since 2006. No, I’m not kidding, people that don’t live in the UK. We have had 6 rubbish wet summers so this weather makes a nice change.

This was Saturday’s outfit (I’m off work this week so posting is going to be a few days behind) and I spent the morning doing chores. After an early lunch I headed off to my cousin’s daughter’s 2nd birthday party. There were a few too many children there for my liking (but then I guess that’s to be expected at a child’s birthday party. My niece was one of the children though and it was lovely to see her, along with the rest of my dad’s family. My other cousin and his wife have been working in China for the past two years and they were there as they are home for the summer vacation at present.

In the evening the young man and I had some friends over for a barbeque and it was so warm that we were able to sit outside until around 9.30pm.

The flip flops are one of my latest picks with this month’s Sarenza voucher. They are by Skechers and are so comfy! I have a real dislike for flip flops with rubber straps – I find they make my feet hot and start to rub. So when I spied this pair with a textile upper and the pretty bow, I snapped them up. They also come in black and white and if this weather continues I will be very tempted to buy those too!

Mint green top – Jasper Conran (charity shop)
Khaki shorts – New Look Tall
Pink and orange flip flops – Skechers (c/o Sarenza)
Pink beads – gifted
Pink bracelet – Dorothy Perkins (?)

It’s another hot one today but I opted to cover up with a loose fitting t shirt to avoid sunburn and the chill of the air conditioning. If I could have got away with shorts for the office I would have done it, but cropped jeans were the best I could do really. I have to admit that the wedges didn’t last that long – I had some flip flops delivered from Sarenza first thing and as my feet were already hot I had to break my own rule about office footwear and spent most of the day in the flip flops.

This is the dress I was going to wear on Tuesday but decided against as it was so hot. Today the forecast was for sunshine but less hot that Tuesday so it was time to get this dress out again. I really like the shape of this and it’s cotton so it’s comfy to wear, and fully lined so no messing around with underskirts is required. It works equally as well with a polo neck under it in the winter which is why I’ve kept it around for so many years.

Last night I went to meet my sister in Leeds. We had some tea in Zizzi’s: their skinny pizza is only 13 WW points and is delish! Then we went on a cheesecake hunt (I’d had a little taste of my friend’s slice from the work canteen just before I finished work and it left me wanting more...) but failed to find any. We tried two Starbucks but they were both out, and Patisserie Valerie was about to close. We had to settle for cake in Costa in the end and then had a wander around the Trinity Leeds complex, whose stores are open til 8pm every night. All this was killing time before we went to the Grand Theatre to see Priscilla, Queen of the Desert The Musical. Starring Jason Donovan. And Sam Kratz (Richard Grieve) out of Neighbours. It. Was. Awesome. It was very camp, very 70s disco and a little bit silly, but I would definitely recommend seeing it if it comes to your neck of the woods. I’ve never seen the 1994 movie (starring Guy ‘Mike from Neighbours’ Pearce), but now I really want to!  The show runs at the Grand until Saturday, then returns to Bradford Alhambra in October.

There was a respite from the heat today but it was still dry and warm so another summer dress seemed appropriate. I wore my denim jacket in the office as the air conditioning was making me cold again.

Outfit: Equally Easy Summer Dressing – Top, Skirt, Shoes, Shrug

09-07-13e

LK Bennett leopard peep toes

An equally easy alternative to yesterday’s dress+shoes is today’s skirt+tank+shoes. I initially planned to wear another dress but the one I picked out is low cut and needed a tank under it, and it’s a little too warm for layering right now. Not that I am complaining about the heat mind, it makes a welcome change for me to be warm. So I switched out the dress for a skirt and added peep toe heels and a shrug to make it office appropriate. (I have this thing about not wearing vest tops/tanks in the office – it’s purely personal, there are no rules against it, but if I were putting together and office dress code tanks/vests would be on my list of things I don’t want to see. Along with bra straps, spaghetti straps, more than 3 inches of thigh, flip flops and board shorts. I don’t think I’m asking too much here.)

Can I just say how much I love shrugs? I got this one from Long Tall Sally recently and it’s lightweight but just right for adding coverage to my arms and shoulders. The sleeves are super long and there’s ruching at the cuffs and on the neckline. I’ve been collecting shrugs since they first emerged back in 1998 and they are great as they don’t hide your waist like full cardigans do.

09-07-13d

Last night we had our new stove delivered (I know – first proper summer in 6 years and we’re having a multi-fuel stove installed. It will be great come winter though.) so there wasn’t really time for a barbeque. I’d been to the gym anyway so was late home. Monday nights are never that exciting in our house.
